How Google Pay Works for Malaysian E-Commerce: Cards, ShopeePay and TNG eWallet

October 01, 2026

Google Pay is often associated with paying by phone at a physical checkout. For Malaysian online businesses, however, its role has expanded beyond card-based payments.

In April 2025, Google introduced ShopeePay and TNG eWallet integration with Google Pay in Malaysia, allowing Android users to use either e-wallet when shopping on participating mobile websites through Google Chrome.

Google described the rollout as its first e-wallet integrations in Southeast Asia.

For merchants, this means Google Pay can provide another route to both eligible card payments and selected local e-wallets within supported online checkout journeys.

What Is Google Pay?

Google Pay is a digital payment option that lets eligible customers use supported payment methods associated with their Google account or Google Wallet during checkout.

For supported online journeys, customers can choose Google Pay instead of manually entering payment information for every transaction.

In Malaysia, Google maintains an up-to-date list of supported banks and cards for Google Wallet. Because issuer and card support can change, merchants should refer customers to Google's current list rather than publishing a fixed list that may become outdated.

What Changed for Google Pay in Malaysia?

The key change was the addition of ShopeePay and TNG eWallet to participating mobile Chrome checkout journeys in April 2025.

According to Google Malaysia's announcement, Android users can use these e-wallets when shopping on participating mobile websites through Google Chrome.

Customers can select the Google Pay button at checkout or choose eWallet when prompted in Chrome, then select ShopeePay or TNG eWallet.

The supported flow allows payment to be completed without switching to a separate wallet app.

Google also named Nando's and US Pizza among participating Fiuu merchants available during the initial rollout.

How Do ShopeePay and TNG eWallet Work Through Google Pay?

On participating mobile websites in Chrome, eligible users can choose ShopeePay or TNG eWallet through the Google Pay checkout flow, complete any required first-use verification, authenticate, and finish the payment.

1
Reach CheckoutCustomer shops on a participating mobile website using Android and Chrome.
2
Select WalletChoose Google Pay or eWallet, then select ShopeePay or TNG eWallet.
3
Verify & AuthenticateFirst use may require verification, followed by fingerprint or PIN authentication.
4
Complete PaymentPayment finishes through the supported Google Pay flow.

Google also says users can top up their selected e-wallet directly through Google Pay.

Where Does Google Pay Fit Alongside Cards, FPX and Direct E-Wallet Checkout?

Google Pay is an additional checkout route rather than a replacement for cards, FPX or direct e-wallet acceptance.

Payment Route Typical Journey What It Does
Google Pay with card Select Google Pay → choose eligible saved card → authenticate Uses eligible card credentials through Google Pay
Google Pay with ShopeePay / TNG eWallet Select Google Pay/eWallet → choose wallet → authenticate Provides access to selected local e-wallets within supported mobile Chrome checkout
Direct card checkout Enter/select card → complete required authentication Standard online card-payment flow
FPX Select bank → authorise payment Malaysian online banking payment
Direct e-wallet checkout Select wallet → follow supported wallet flow Direct payment through a specific e-wallet

What Does This Mean for Malaysian E-Commerce Merchants?

  • Less Repetitive Card Entry: Eligible customers can select a supported card already available through Google Pay instead of manually entering card information during every supported transaction.
  • Access to Selected Malaysian E-Wallets: ShopeePay and TNG eWallet can also be used through participating Google Pay mobile checkout journeys.
  • Fewer App Switches for Supported E-Wallet Payments: For the supported ShopeePay and TNG eWallet flow, Google states that customers can pay without switching to the separate wallet app.
  • Another Option Within the Existing Payment Mix: Google Pay can sit alongside cards, FPX, direct e-wallets and other payment methods. The goal is to offer payment choices that make sense for the customers the business serves.

Which Cards Support Google Pay in Malaysia?

The supported issuer and card list changes over time. Merchants and customers should refer to Google's current Malaysia supported-payment-method list.

What Should Merchants Check Before Enabling Google Pay?

Area What to Check
Customer devices Does the business receive meaningful Android and mobile-web traffic?
Customer payment behaviour Are supported cards, ShopeePay or TNG eWallet relevant to the customer base?
Checkout environment Where will Google Pay be presented?
Payment provider Does the merchant's current payment setup support the required Google Pay integration?
Payment results How are successful, failed and cancelled transactions handled?
Reporting How will Google Pay transactions be identified for reconciliation?
Testing Have the relevant card, e-wallet and transaction-result journeys been tested before launch?

Fiuu merchants were also part of the initial Malaysian e-wallet rollout. Google's official announcement named Nando's and US Pizza among the Fiuu merchants where customers could begin using the ShopeePay and TNG eWallet Google Pay experience.

Should Every Malaysian Merchant Add Google Pay?

Not necessarily. Google Pay is more relevant when the merchant's customer base and checkout environment match the supported experience.

  • How much checkout traffic comes from Android devices?
  • How much comes from mobile?
  • Are customers already using ShopeePay or TNG eWallet?
  • Which payment methods are selected most often?
  • Do customers frequently return to make repeat purchases?

Google Pay Now Has a Broader Role in Malaysian Online Checkout

Google Pay in Malaysia now extends beyond eligible saved-card payments.

With ShopeePay and TNG eWallet integrated into participating mobile Chrome checkout journeys, eligible customers have another route to payment methods they may already use.

For merchants, that makes Google Pay worth evaluating as part of the wider payment mix rather than treating it only as another digital wallet logo.

Key question: Would Google Pay give an important part of your customer base a more convenient route to the payment methods they already use?
