Trends: Agentic Commerce Next ‘Inflection Point’ in SE Asia’s Digital Payments Landscape
Southeast Asia’s payments landscape is moving beyond QR-led adoption towards agentic commerce, where AI agents may initiate, execute and reconcile payments with minimal human intervention. While digital payment usage and regional connectivity are gaining momentum, trust, fraud responsibility, regulation, data sovereignty and market differences remain key challenges. For merchants, the value will increase in secure, reliable payment outcomes, not just the payment rails used.
Eng Sheng Guan, CEO of Fiuu, said acquirers will remain a critical part of the payments ecosystem even as AI reshapes the transaction journey. He noted that AI can make payments more seamless or automated, but there will still be reliance on payment networks such as Fiuu to complete those transactions securely and reliably.
Fiuu will be participating in upcoming exhibitions across Kuala Lumpur, including the Malaysian International Food & Beverage Trade Fair (MIFB) 2026, Franchise Expo Malaysia (FEM) 2026, and APHM International Healthcare Conference & Exhibition (APHM) 2026. These events bring Fiuu closer to businesses in F&B, franchise, healthcare, retail, and service-led sectors that are looking to improve checkout, support walk-in customers, accept payments at temporary sales locations, and improve transaction convenience across physical business environments.

Thailand Weighs BNPL Rules as Small-Ticket Spending Grows
Thailand is preparing tighter oversight for buy now, pay later services as instalment payments become more common for everyday spending. The Bank of Thailand is reportedly considering measures such as age and income restrictions, eligible product limits, minimum purchase values, and caps on charges. The development reflects stronger regulatory focus on responsible digital credit as BNPL becomes more closely linked to e-commerce, mobile payments, and daily consumer purchases.
Despite Promises, Stablecoin Cross-Border Integrations Fail to Scale in Asia
Stablecoins are gaining attention for their potential to make cross-border payments faster and more cost-efficient but scaling these use cases across Asia remains challenging. A new report highlighted issues such as fragmented regulations, complex multi-party integrations, corridor-specific liquidity needs, and operational failures that often appear only when transaction volumes increase. This shows that while digital currencies may support future payment innovation, businesses still need reliable, well-managed payment processes that can handle real-world complexity across different markets.
China Makes New Push to Take Yuan Global, Vows Vigilance Against Financial Risks
China has announced new measures to support wider international use of the yuan, including tools to provide yuan liquidity to foreign monetary authorities and a pilot program for offshore yuan foreign exchange trading in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. The move reflects continued focus on cross-border financial connectivity and regional settlement options as businesses and financial institutions look for more efficient ways to support international trade and transactions.
